so you just mean coming up with the melody and instrumental parts themselves is hard for you?
Sioux NDN said:i got a couple of beats that sound good that got brass's, strings, and other shit and they sound pretty good, but then i got like 20 beats that are the just drums and sound dope as fuck but they need instruments
Halii said:well, from there it's just music theory, and that's something i couldn't teach you well over the internet homie... sorry.
just do some trial and error and figure out what sounds good.
if you use multiple instruments, make sure it's in the same key, meaning it's most of the same notes and it doesn't clash.
like when you play a natural (white key) and an accidental (black key) at the same time and it sounds like a cat screeching, you wanna avoid that... unless that's what you're going for.
:D
Sioux NDN said:i know all that stuff but im just not good at it
Halii said:right click the channel for the instrument you'd like to use, and choose 'piano roll.'
lay down the notes. you can change the length. if you need them to be shorter, use the highlight tool, click on the wrench on the top bar and select 'chop.' you can chop them however you'd like.
or, if you want to lay down a basic chord progression, you can mess with a bunch of different chords by clicking the arrow on the top bar of the piano roll, and selecting 'chords.' when you set a note, the chord will form itself around that note.
if you need help with anything else feel free to ask me. (:

Permalink Reply by Robert J on June 9, 2010 at 3:33am Ableton Studio 8 and Reason 4...
If you're looking for free software, then Audacity is a good place to start for recording, and Ardour is decent as well, though only available for the Linux and Mac OS X platforms as of right now.
But yeah, I primarily use Reason 4 for synths and stuff, and Ableton for any live and/or studio recording and sample manipulation. It rocks. I also have Native Instruments Komplete 4, which is a tad bit dated now, but still has some great stuff. Sometimes I'll just run a finished or partially finished track through Traktor, 'cause it's got a great compliment of effects processing plugins...
I'd be down for a certain amount of collaboration also. And if your material is of sufficient quality, you'd be more than welcome to be a part of the label repertoire as well.
Started my own label, Panthère Records, six years ago. I swear by the software for all my production needs - nothing wrong with an old school hardware-only setup, but software is far more convenient for me personally, and the flow of creativity is that much easier and better.
