Doing an argumentative paper on Tech's "Mainstream going him vs. him going mainstream" and would like to include SERIOUS opinions and beliefs on this matter to include in the paper for different views. This is an opportunity to put everyones opinions and how they see the label going. Any input appreciated. (P.S -Any interviews/videos you think may be good post those too)

I'm doing it because it's a great example for an argumentative paper. Man i've seen your comments on posts before, so I know you could have something useful for me to put in the paper. Plus my professor likes Tech N9ne

get off the internet and do your homework son

Is this for a class in college? If so, find something else.

The reason i say its not really a paper worthy topic is mostly because the concept of mainstream isn't a solid concept.  Its more or less a perspective view on what 'Mainstream' is.

Is Tech N9ne getting more popular?  - Yes
Is Tech N9ne paying for mainstream media promotion? - No, I don't believe he is.
So essentially he is still independent, but growing in popularity.

You see what i'm sayin'? Some people believe that mainstream is mass popularity.

Others believe that mainstream is cooperate corruption. (Popularity that is being paid for to benefit both parties)

Yes it's a college english class, but my professor likes the idea and would like to see how everyones opinion varies. She follows the forums and sees all the responses, and different personalities and thinks it could be a good paper

I down to bounce ideas around with you man.

Tech is definitely not going mainstream. He just made uralya dissing the industry punks that are mainstream, collabing with mainstream artists has nothing do with going mainstream, he still raps about whatever the hell he wants (i.e. tasting chicks blood), his videos may get played on MTV but the one of the last ones he did am I a psycho is real fucked up like " why do I let this stripper burn me on my arm wit her cigarette in the same spot ten times... I feel the burn I palm the clitoris... I use the dough to allure ladies to manure bathe me" what kind of mainstream artist uses that lyricism? He still raps about his fucked up life experiences in extreme gory detail and mainstream artists do but they keep it very general, shit we've heard a million times (i.e. bitch giving me head, she gotta big ass, etc.)

I disagree that there isn't a clear concept of what 'mainstream' is, I think just most people confuse what 'mainstream' is and can unfairly throw someone into the mainstream category. Some people think that having tons of success and doing songs with popular people is 'going mainstream' but it isn't, though it is a very small line waiting to be crossed because having tons of success and starting to do songs with more popular artists 'usually' do catapult some artists to 'sell out'. Here's where I think a clear concept of going 'mainstream' comes into play. Selling out and going mainstream means that you started out at the bottom in the underground, and you've developed your own style of music, you wrote your heart into the music and you got an underground following out of it, then next thing you know your making it big and you turn your back on everything and change to mirror the trends and style of what's hot in the 'mainstream'. Also you end up singing and talking about what the 'industry' wants you to be promoting so that they can sell a certain image and type of music to make lots of money off of your 'fame'. Tech for the most part falls into the not mainstream category, but you can argue with some of his songs that he has done mainstream stuff his whole career. For the majority of his music he has rapped about very unique and strange topics and represented things the 'industry' or the 'mainstream' have no interest in, meaning that he has stayed true to himself. Some of his music though, and this is where I might lose some people, does represent the image the 'industry' has wanted out of rap and hip hop since the early ninety's and has achieved ever since the success of N.W.A., and that image is being hardcore gangster, promoting the image of violence, drugs, partying, getting bitches, being crazy etc. Ever since N.W.A. most rappers since have mirrored that image and style. Why? because that image is very attractive to young kids, whether there from the hood or from the suburbs, and it sells a lot of money, cause these kids want to be badass just like these rappers. Obviously Tech in various parts of his career has fit that image very very well, so in that instance he could be considered mainstream because he is still selling that image to people even in the underground, Tech has party songs, and songs about fucking people up and songs about being a blood and gang life. So even though Tech has done it in his own unique style that only Tech can do, he still is representing the overall image of 'mainstream' rap. You could even argue that Tech glorifies this image better then any other rapper, I mean I used to want to be like Tech, become all crazy and strange and party drinking Caribou Lou, taking XTC, rapping like him and everything. And I emulated him pretty well, even got a whole group a kids to go crazy over his music. But Tech isn't mainstream and here's why. Unlike most rappers Tech doesn't sing about this crazy shit to sell records, he is simply telling his life through music, and he doesn't want anyone to emulate the things he rapped about, in fact he puts it out there in part so that you don't make the same mistakes, and to help those who are really fucked up and strange in the head, so that they have something to relate to so they don't feel alone in this fucked up world. That's what makes him real and not 'mainstream' is because he isn't putting on an image like most rappers, he is actually everything he raps about, he used to be on the street in a gang, he did do all those crazy drugs and did have all that crazy sex and parties. He isn't using all that to create an image, he is just putting his experiences into his music. So I would say that after weighing both sides that he definitely isn't mainstream at all, he is true to himself, and some of the fucked up shit he talks about he wants NOBODY to emulate unlike the more 'mainstream' rappers. Yeah he has achieved success so that's going to influence his writing but that's unavoidable, if Tech writes his life then his success is going to drip over into his music, but the fact is he hasn't changed one bit, he is still Tech. He didn't change his style or his persona to fit the 'industries' model of what's popular, he only does what he feels in his heart and he is still more dedicated then ever to us Technicians and hasn't turned his back on us to achieve more fame or whatever. He also promotes love and positivity in his music, he doesn't want anyone to emulate his darkness, he wants people to rise up out of their darkness and find their own light, which is something the industry would never want to promote. So far as I'm concerned he isn't 'mainstream', he is just a real talented dude who worked his ass off and achieved success without it going to his head and selling out. Anyway hope that helps bro, I know it's a long post but I figured if your writing it for a college class that I better write out my entire thought process so you got the true image of my opinion on the matter. haha good luck on your paper man

Slance, no offense but i think your points are all invalid. From my understanding of your post you fully base what mainstream music is based on the content of what is being said in the music.  Which doesn't necessarily have anything to do with radio, TV play.
Nicholas alan Price  - This is what i was trying to get at in my other posts, its going to be so hard to write this paper because 'Mainstream' is a big word, and it could be taken many different ways.  I think the real question is what characteristics define the word 'Mainstream' is it Radio Play? Popularity? Cooperate Funding? or just the normalcy of content?  Judging by Slance's post he defines mainstream as normalcy of lyrical content.  Which in my opinion has almost nothing to do with what 'mainstream' is.
