If you enlist in the military, you start off making less than $30,000 a year. They don't do it for the paycheck. If you enlist in the military, you sacrifice many of the freedoms that most people in this country take for granted (e.g. freedom of speech). Your ability to get an education is at the mercy of the military. If they can spare you, you can go to college and defer your commitment until after you graduate. Otherwise, you have to fulfill your contract before you can even consider going to school. The benefits provided to veterans don't make it any less of a sacrifice.They do, however, allow them a (much deserved) leg up once they finish their period of service, giving many veterans a path out of poverty and towards a better life.

 

Selective service is still a policy in the United States, but we haven't been in a war that required conscription since WWII, and I have my draft card in my wallet. You can go to prison for not having yours signed and registered. Volunteering for service is just as great a sacrifice, though, because you have to look at your career options and CHOOSE to forgo your own freedom to fight for this country.

 

How does living near a military base or post affect your life? It doesn't, really. It just puts the sacrifice they've made in your face more often. Areas with large military populations are also associated with lower crime rates, so why would you resent living near them? In reality, the only reason to hate the soldiers is misplaced anger about American foreign policy. But soldiers don't have the right to choose their jobs once they sign up, so direct your hate towards the ones who tell them what to do. Those people would be the politicians.

 

One man's ignorance doesn't mean the end of the world, but that doesn't mean we should blindly accept it without reproach. Education is the greatest path to peace.

I'm a drug user (and, to some degree accordingly, a criminal), and I only say "Fuck the police" when I'm rapping along to a song. Don't stereotype me, bro! I know the benefits of a good police force...like a longer life-span. FTP started as a response to LAPD violence, but it's clearly been embraced by some extremely ignorant people. Most criminals with a high school education recognize that the problems they have with law enforcement are because of the laws, not the enforcers.

@LxUn1c0, lol I wasn't stereotyping breh, I was making a point to Daimon since he's a little slow in the brain, that there's a difference between a kid in the bubble gum rap industry saying "fuck all the army troops" because he ran out of rhyming words, and a person breaking the law saying "fuck the police" lol. Obviously Daimon can't see when something has reason and when something is an unjust display of cuntdom. Then again he was also confused about the difference between saying "fuck all the army troops" and me calling him a fucking dumbass. lol.
