It's serious. It's a whole "label" of young ass kids who record one really shitty song in attempts to gain some sort of fame or wealth. It's a big part of the music industry these days. Labels buy the rights and ownership of songs, music, or lyrics and put a face to them. They record one song and hope it'll sell a million singles on iTunes.  The label takes their (very large) cut of the profits, and that's it. They invest very little money in comparison to how much they hope to make.
