They started off as "nu Metal" which worked well their first album, but by Minutes to Midnight it was clear they weren't even hard enough for that title anymore; by the time "A Thousand Suns" rolled around it was clear they were about as hard as a pillow fight between bunny rabbits. I'd say they're "Alternative Pop" at best.
