Ok, so I think its fair to say most people pirate music. Period. Now you might think its a terrible thing if you don't but look at this:

This might be true if record labels paid bands all the money from their album sales – but they don’t. Artists make the overwhelming majority of their revenue from live concerts and special engagement tickets, and merchandise sales. Record companies make money off album sales. They effectively buy the artist’s work, and act as though they own the rights to distribute it, but they don’t own the artist or their ability to perform their own music. Music piracy doesn’t pirate concert tickets, that’s the job of the growing ticket-sales racket both on and off-line, which has sparked its own controversies lately as more fans (including pirates) try to support their favorite bands by paying to see them. This argument could even be taken a step further by poising a rhetorical questions: “How many people have gone to pay for tickets at a concert featuring a band that they first discovered due to pirated/redistributed material?”

Of course this wouldn't apply to independent record labels (i.e. Strange) but big record labels yes.

Thoughts?

I don't give a fuck if someone downloads from a major record label. People come here saying oh I'm a huge tech n9ne fan yet will dl his music in a heart beat and not buy it. Support your artist, The money earned on record sales is used to tour and some people wonder why tech isn't coming to their area, Record sales also get recorded so if sales are low in your area The tour isn't going to come there.
i agree with you, except for the fact that if a record label makes less money then other acts wont be signed or even worse other acts on the label will get the boot just because albums aren't getting sold. and we all know it wouldn't be one of these dudes like lil wayne getting kicked off, but proly a lesser known artist with more talent
I look at it this way if someone walked into your work and took what u worked hard on how would u feel? By pirating music it is stealing their work

Thats the thing not everyone is gunna go back and buy the t-shirt and pay for the pizza

true. i feel like if you like the album and you want that artist to continue to make music, then support them and help them make money so they can continue.

I dunno man ive had many arguments on this topic myself and also i wrote a long fuckin discussion on this site also.Ppl pirate and sadly enough it isnt going to stop.Im old school i guess I just went to hastings last wednesday and spent about an hour before i had to go to work looking through all the albums untill i found some shit i had to have.Ppl just dont do that shit anymore(like my older brother who has just discovered torrent files) but anyhow I would much rather have a physical copy in my grip.To me pirating is 1 of the main culprits when it comes to the present state of major label hiphop not having any variety. The majors only market a certain sound that looks good on paper(what is selling the most). So when all you have is preteens buying the bulk of albums just for the song they hear 50 times an hour on the radio then logically that is what youre going to hear on the radio.Pirating has its benefits for artists sometimes but the bad outweigh the good.Of course pirating has a negative affect on artists and labels like tech along with strange, who thrive off of touring and get funding for touring through album sales. In order for us to see any change within the politics of hiphop its on us as fans to get off our asses and make our way to the local record store and break bread.Ppl like Strange Music,Gorilla Union,SlaughterHouse, and Atmosphere are absolutely vital to the rap game and have the ability to turn the industry upside down. These artists and organizations I just mentioned along with plenty others are laying down the blueprints to becoming successful in the industry without having to rely on major labels. One day we might just hear the shit we want on the radio, and these indie artists are the key to that dilemma. Why do you think the major media outlets will not give these artists enough shine to get known? Its because they dont want a self preserved, self contained label who doesnt need thier insight and help. They want to keep all the money for themselves.I say fuck the middle man.So the next time some of you kids down a torrent or a file or a couple of more gig's on that ipod think about what you might be contributing to before you do it.And if you dont give a fuck then you just wasted a couple of minutes reading my opinion.

Oh yeah big ups to the dude who started the "its just me and my copy" discussion I was clowning but honestly i feel the same way when i get my hands on some album crack,
and another side note the albums's i bought wednesday were e 40's latest (the ball street journal) dope album by the way
and i found a copy of cypress hill's "temples of boom" the cd was only 4 bucks used but was in perfect condition, classic album by the way
