If you live in a swing state, please get out there and vote this election cycle. It's too important to just abstain.

There are too many people (Republicans) that are trying to make it harder for minorities, students, etc. to vote so it's imperative that those of us who can make sure we do. Voter ID laws address the least common form of voter fraud, yet they are the most common form of legislation used and affect and disable a large amount of people from voting on time (mainly people who would likely vote for the Democratic party). 25% of African Americans don't have Photo-Identification and approx. 17-18% of Latinos don't either. Out of state students can't use their school IDs as proper identification to vote, but NRA members can use their fire-arm permits. Seems awfully one-sided isn't it? I live in Florida (where we have a history of voter fraud) so I know I'm going to exercise my right to vote and I think this discussion board could use a new topic. Sorry to all the international users :P obviously feel free to voice your input. Now, if you live in Alabama, sorry but Romney's gonna win that state, I still say get out and vote! but I understand if you don't want to either lol. But for the people in the swing states like Ohio, Pennsylvania, Florida, etc. PLEASE vote. There's gonna be a lot of people that show up and get told no. And it doesn't help that voting is done from 7am-7pm, making it already harder for 9-5 hour working citizens. Personally I think it should be a holiday where we get the day off, but Republicans have said over and over, they don't want more people voting, they want less voters. So please, get out there.

yeah, instead let's give it to oil companies and banks that fucked up our country in the first place. let the poor die man! population control, right?

seriously people who say this type of nonsense don't understand how to run a country

Word, I guess i just feel like voting for me personally isn't going to solve anything.  All in All the people who run for president are already people who have connections and ties with all the major cooperation's that 'fund' the canidates to keep things they way they are so they can walk away with a huge profit.. I don't really know what i'm talking about...I don't know shit about politics but from what I've noticed there hasn't been any change.  Maybe small changes that haven't really had any major affect. You're pretty much right though, the people we see on TV have already been hand-picked for us basically. There are plenty of legitimate candidates that run, but they never make it big (or usually don't, there are a few, Bernie Sanders for instance, Independent Senator of Vermont). I wouldn't say it's 50/50 though, closer to like 90/10 on the corporate side and 10% on the people side unfortunately, Democrats are more on our side at least, Republicans it's a no brainer, they're straight up corporate whores. At least Democrats kinda help the little man, even though they screw us over here 'n there too, they actually fight for us from time to time, but I still don't support them, they're just the lesser of two evils. 'N voting can only solve so much, at the presidential level anyways. Local elections are more important, and getting active locally is even more important, vote is a great thing, but to some degree it's useless, especially depending on the state you live in.

I'd vote for a fucking coffee mug before I'd vote for Obama.

Bush wasn't even running in 2008.  You're 4 years off.

If you think your vote matters watch Hacking Democracy. Its an HBO documentary, at least an hour long, but it is an interesting watch. It is all about the rigged election of 2008 when Bush "allegedly" was re-elected. Im not saying dont go out and vote, but I am saying I dont think it matters at all who you vote for. The Owners will get what they want regardless.

I think its more important to take a stand on issues at the local level. Fuck putting your faith into crooked ass politicians who dont give a shit about us.

see, I hate that mentality, it's not even about who the other candidate is, it's about getting the other guy out of office. I understand not liking Obama, he's done a lot of shitty things, but he's done a lot of good things too, you act like we elected Hitler. But I'm just curious, what are your problems with him, because there are real criticisms, and fake criticisms, and usually people who say shit like this, just spew bullshit from Fox news, so I hope that you aren't one of those people. Because very few people are going to vote Romney this year, they're going to vote against Obama, and that's wrong, there are other candidates and if enough people supported them you could make them serious candidates.

Charles man, i like you.  You seem real as all hell.

I once used to smoke a lot of pot, and i had this group of friends.  This group of friends consisted of 5 people, 3 chicks 2 dudes.  I used to go over and blaze bowls with them at their 1 Bed Room apartment that was just down the street from my college dorm.  There was 5 People sharing a 1 Bedroom apartment, the girls all worked at little fast food joints maybe 3 hours every other day and the dudes sat around and smoked/dealt weed and other drugs all day long.  I'm not certain how much exactly what the rent cost but they all split it so it ended up they were probably paying around 150-200 each.  2 of the females had food stamps and 1 of the dudes had food stamps.  Both the dudes were also receiving money for unemployment.  They were bringing it a decent amount of cash, hence the reason i would go over to their place all the time and we would get baked and then eat a bunch of food.  They didn't have any real responsibilities, i dropped out of college because my head was shoved so far up my ass i didn't care about school just hanging out with these people.  They were making it just fine i see no point to work when i could smoke weed all day and cash in a decent amount of federal money.  I moved back, lived with my parents and nearly had to re-start my morals all over again 'POP!' (sound of head popping back out of my ass) Now i sit here only 2 years later and despise every single one of those people.  I got my current girlfriend pregnant, we had a Daughter who is now 7 months old  my life changed.  Now i work a pretty decent job with the State, Bring in enough money to pay rent and provide for the family (girlfriend works too)  and just try to save so that one day i can own my own house.  Its hard work trying to save up money in an economy that has fallen to such shit.  It also doesn't help that along with the high prices everything costs now days we still get nice Tax dings (I file single '0' and i always will I'd rather get an extra check than a bill)  I just have a hard time going full support Democratic, I work for my money and god damn it i want to keep that shit.  My heart goes out to those family in need. But taking my money away and giving it to them isn't whats going to change things, that's a temporary fix.  What those families need are jobs, opportunities, ways for them to make a living for themselves. A wise man once told me give a man a fish, feed him for a night.  Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.

I don't want to pay taxes for these people to abuse the system with, and there are a lot of them who do abuse it. Even people who 'need' government assistance are most often born into the poverty, or have placed themselves where they are at based on decisions they have made in the past. The people who are born into poverty lack opportunity, not physical capability, or mental capacity.  Then there are the people who just are dealt the shitty hand and need assistance, that's fine.. I don't mind my tax dollars being spent responsibly.  But when all you need to do is prove you don't have a job to get a check i mean that's just fucked up..If your going to be doing it they need to do it the right way.

Also whats up with spending 100,000 Million dollars to build fancy state buildings? Instead of building a standard office building for the state or federal employees they feel the need to build big, extravagant, elegant, lobby's with crazy architecture that just rack the prices up...whats the point?

I think that Americans should be-able to choose where to invest their tax dollars. I can't stress that enough

Thanks I appreciate that, and I'm so fucking glad you just said that, I was just gonna bring up, just like with our penal system, instead of asking "what do we do with these people" once they're on welfare or once they're in prison, why don't we look at why they're there in the first place? But it's so easy to blame the individual, because it's hard to uproot a dysfunctional system. Welfare isn't a failure because there's lazy people, we have a society where education is hard to achieve for people with lower income (poor stay poor), we say "hey, achieve these norms" but don't give them the proper opportunities to get there. And I hate the excuse when one person makes it out of the slums and says "See, you can make it too" no, 1 in 10,000 can make it, but our system isn't set up so that everyone can get out, it's just not like that. I'm taking a Sociology course right now and it's what I want to major in so this is something I really like to look into. Don't get me wrong, can these people be doing things to better their lives? Yes, of course. There are people who piss away their opportunity, that's evident. But when we sit here and wait 'til they fuck up to do something with them, that's what breeds more failure. Our criminals have a 75% recidivism rate where they go right back to prison and that's a fucking failure. I don't know how to fix people who are already criminals (because realistically rehab doesn't necessarily work all the time), but I can tell you that education and building a strong social capital will stop people from becoming them in the first place. It's not necessarily that much different. Once you're a criminal, you get a stigma attached, and every time you go to a job interview you have to divulge that info, and it makes your chances of getting the job slimmer, and when you keep getting turned down from all these legitimate jobs, what're you gonna do? You gotta live and eat, so they go back to illegal shit and what do you know? They met people in prison so now they've got more connections and when they go back in, the cycle repeats. Put someone in the system of being poor, where it's harder to get back to a comfortable area, because you only have so much, and it's harder to save money. Same shit. There are people out there where you can look at the person 'n say "wtf are you doing?" but there's almost always a societal underlying cause that causes people to get into that situation in the first place. How many rich people who were born into wealth end up on welfare from ignorant spending? probably a slim few, it's not like rich people are statistically more likely to be harder workers, in fact, some would argue that the converse is true, so why do we condemn the people at the bottom just trying to survive? I've seen people throw their lives away, but we're social creatures, we're learn our norms from our peers and society, I don't necessarily know how to solve the problem, but blaming the individual doesn't solve shit. We have to look at the overall system that's causing people to turn out this way, but people don't want to because that's more difficult and it's a lot more work. Give people the skills and knowledge to be successful and clear cut ideals of success that are realistic and maybe our turnout of dysfunctional citizens wouldn't be so bad.

Definitely, that's why I kinda laugh (but wanna scream) that we bitch that our tax dollars are going to help other people survive, when a lot more is going to the most profitable companies in the world in the oil companies and such. It's ridiculous. We can't give our citizens healthcare or education but we can give Exxon Mobil and BP an extra buck when they already make billions without our help.
