Hey all, my friend and I have arguments in regards to the rap game...  E.g. Mainstream, underground and independent labels etc.... However long story short, if Tech N9ne were to go mainstream, what would be the advantages and disadvantages  for himself and his fans....  Sorry if I do t make sense :/ but hopefully you understand what I'm trying to say.
What are the advantages and disadvantages in going mainstream?

Mainstream disadvantage for me "the fan" would be that other people would play his songs out (most likely the pop-ish radio hits)and I wouldn't get a chance to enjoy them as much.

The question you should be asking is the advantages/disadvantages of staying independent or signing to a major label.

at this point there's no reason for tech to go mainstream. NONE.

mainstream pros

-more exposure/radio play /video airtime

-advancement check/signing bonus

-finer groupies

mainstream cons

-smaller percentage of money artists makes

-no artistic freedom/forced collabs and forced subject matter which = shittier music

-major label politics which could amount to never ending pushbacks

album shelving and black balling

basically the politics of the majors are evident with every artist that is signed

tech/strange are averaging 15 mill a year w/o  major marketing (many major label artists do not even come close)so theres really no point for tech to be signed what so ever imo unless he is willing to sacrifice everything they have built for a lil bit more fame.

IMO since Tech's independent success allows him the pros, but to a lesser extent, and none of the cons (that Duke listed). There is no reason for him to seek mainstream major record labels. Not many mainstream artists see Jay-Z, P Diddy, or 50 Cent levels of fame and fortune. Hell, the reason they see that much success is by branching in to other business ventures besides music.
